Teacher Bios and Class Descriptions

Jennifer Berman started classical ballet at the age of six.  She studied with the Birmingham School of Fine Arts, The Birmingham Southern Conservatory of Fine arts, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Ballet gave her the awareness of proper technique and form and the connection of the mind and body.  She has been a certified fitness instructor for five years and loves helping her clients achieve their goals.  Jennifer enjoys the endurance and challenge of hatha yoga as well as the wonderful health benefits she has experienced.  Hot Vinyasa Series (Hot Yoga), is a vigorous and flowing practice in a heated room.  Vinyasa blends the major traditions in a new expression combining the best of ancient and modern yogic wisdom.  It promotes strength, flexibility, endurance, grace, and joy.

Christine Marie Caiola’s interest in yoga began through a strong background in dance, gymnastics and sports, a great interest in the mind-body connection, and a BA in psychology.  She studied with Nadia Jenkins until beginning the study of Kundalini with Rama Singh Khalsa, then trained in Astanga with Akasha Shane Ellis, and she was certified in March 2002 under the yoga master David Swenson.  Astanga combines a specialized sequencing of postures with focused rhythmic breathing techniques, leading to the development of a lighter, stronger physical body and a clear, peaceful mind.  Christine shares the practice of the Primary series of Astanga through observation, adjustment techniques, alignment, flow and breath awareness.  It consists of Sun Salutations, the standing postures, and the seated sequence, with each posture linked by the Vinyasa (breath movement combination).  A finishing sequence closes the practice with Savasana, allowing a moment for the body to assimilate the activated energy of the body.

Nancy Cambell, always interested in how the body performs during exercise, chose a degree in exercise physiology.  She started practicing yoga a few years ago seeking help with a lower back problem.  In addition to taking care of her back pain, she found that yoga cured the allergy problems she'd dealt with each spring.  Practicing for three years, she has trained under Fran Glendinning to teach her style of Power Yoga that combines hatha yoga postures and series such as Sun Salutations, stretching, strengthening and abdominal work in her own unique style.

Tamryn Etten-Bohm is a certified group fitness and yoga instructor who has taught fitness and wellness programs since 1990.  She has a passion for helping participants transform their bodies through intense, yet mindful, workouts.  She feels blessed to be part of the Center's wellness staff.  Resistance Training, a workout that uses resist-a-balls, bands, and gravity to promote muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and body alignment via resistance and repetition.  All body parts are targeted during this 75 minute class.  Power Yoga, a 75 to 90 minute workout featuring dynamic flow between series of yoga postures, as well as steady muscle contraction through long "powerful" posture holds.  This class will build muscle strength, suppleness, and flexibility.  Relaxation and breathing techniques will also be emphasized.

Mary Felchlin brings a life long passion for yoga to her classes along with extensive training.  Certified by the Atlanta Yoga Fellowship in 1997, she incorporates additional training from the Anusara and Integral styles.  She is a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist and holds certifications in Cardiac Yoga and Yoga as Stress Management   She has trained with Todd Norian, Judith Lasater, Rodney Yee, Sandra Kozak, Barbara Brenaugh, Mary Paffard, Doug Keller, JJ Gromley, and Laura Tyree.  Mary’s classes include body scanning followed by stretching and an energetic workout winding down to a meditative relaxation.  Mary plans to Study Yoga for Cancer Patients at the Satchidananda Ashram in May.  She conveys her perception that the Body/Mind/ Spirit is a total organism working within the context of being part of a greater whole.

Emma Terndrup has been in the health care & fitness industries for over 20 years as a respiratory therapist & group fitness instructor/personal trainer.  She came to yoga thru personal practice and became a yoga instructor by way of a Kripalu Yoga based teacher training program.  Last year, she completed her course at The Physical Mind Institute and received certification to teach the "Method" Pilates mat series.  She is recognized as a "Registered Yoga Teacher" (R.Y.T.) by the Yoga Alliance, a registry created to recognize the professionalism of yoga teachers.  She brings exciting varieties of style through Yoga/Resist-a-ball classes, providing excellent abdominal, upper body, arm and leg workout, and Yoga/Pilates, a flowing, active class with continuous use of core muscles.
